Restaurants — Dining Well in Marin County
Marin County sits precisely between San Francisco and Sonoma wine country, and that position creates both an expectation and an opportunity. The standard here is regional excellence — farm-to-table cooking, locally sourced ingredients, and the kind of thoughtful, ingredient-driven cuisine that Northern California pioneered. From Marin's only Michelin-starred kitchen to oysters shucked at a picnic table on Tomales Bay where they were growing an hour before you arrived, the range of dining in Marin is genuinely extraordinary.
"What makes a great restaurant is rarely just the food — it is the combination of food, setting, and ambiance that creates a complete experience. The food here is prepared with genuine respect for local ingredients because the farms are right here. The fish was in the bay this morning. The oysters were in Tomales Bay an hour ago. That freshness is not a slogan. It is a fact of geography."
"And the settings — a table overlooking San Francisco Bay at sunset, a picnic bench on the shore of Tomales Bay with egrets wading in the shallows, or a cozy corner table at your neighborhood Italian restaurant — all remind you that in Marin, the dining experience extends well beyond the plate."
From the Farmers Market to Your Table
The farmers who set out their produce at the Marin Civic Center market on Sunday morning are supplying the kitchens of Marin's best restaurants by Monday. The oysters being harvested in Tomales Bay this week will appear on menus in Sausalito and San Rafael this weekend.
Sol Food — now one of Marin's most beloved restaurants — started in 2003 as a four-person operation at the San Rafael 4th Street Farmers Market. That origin story perfectly captures the relationship between Marin's food culture and its restaurant culture: rooted in the community, starting small, and growing because the food is genuinely great.
1. Super High-End Dining — The Michelin Star
↑ Back to TopThe only Michelin-starred restaurant in Marin County. Madcap occupies a modest corner storefront at 198 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard in San Anselmo — no white tablecloths, no grand entrance, just 45 seats and Chef Ron Siegel cooking on his own terms. Siegel trained at The French Laundry, Michael Mina, and Aqua, and was the first American chef to defeat an Iron Chef on the original Japanese television series. The Michelin Guide describes it as "upscale yet approachable." For a special occasion, there is nowhere better in Marin County.
2. Waterfront & Scenic Dining
↑ Back to TopMarin's most dramatic dining settings — tables with San Francisco Bay views, marina-front bistros, and gallery gardens where the setting is as much the draw as the menu.
Consistently the finest table in Sausalito. Fresh fish flown from Tokyo daily, an extensive menu of nigiri, sashimi, and beautifully conceived hot and cold plates. Located on Caledonia Street — where Sausalito residents actually eat. Reservations strongly recommended.
A Sausalito institution since 1969 — family-owned, bay views, a menu built around the daily catch hauled in by their own fishing boats. Whole crabs, cioppino, lobster risotto, and perfectly grilled seasonal fish. The kind of place that never gets old because the fish is always fresh and the setting never stops being beautiful.
A lunchtime-only, cash-only sustainable seafood shack on Harbor Drive with a devoted regional following. Fish tacos, clam chowder, oysters, and daily specials reflecting what the boats brought in that morning. Outdoor picnic tables, bay breezes, and fish that was swimming this morning. Does not get more Marin than this.
Located at Cavallo Point Lodge within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area — directly beneath the Golden Gate Bridge's north tower. May be the most dramatically situated dining experience in all of Marin County. Ingredient-driven menu blending Asian influences with Northern California's local and seasonal philosophy. A destination restaurant that rewards completely.
Award-winning chef Michael Mina brought his culinary vision to Tiburon's charming waterfront — a dynamic social dining experience blending bold cuisine with five-star service in a beautifully designed bohemian interior by designer Martin Brudnizki. Views of Richardson Bay and Angel Island.
A deeply beloved San Anselmo institution — Mediterranean-inspired with a genuine commitment to sustainable, locally sourced ingredients. Warm, colorful dining room and an expansive menu of mezze, grilled meats, fresh pasta, and house-made dips and spreads. One of the most welcoming and reliably excellent restaurants in central Marin. The lunch service draws a devoted following of local professionals.
A classic Italian trattoria at the Casa Madrona Hotel on Bridgeway — neighborhood charm with destination-caliber cuisine. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner with locally sourced, seasonally changing Italian-inspired dishes. Voted the most romantic restaurant in Sausalito by OpenTable diners.
A restored historic fishing camp turned inn and restaurant on the edge of Tomales Bay, with a long pier extending into the bay and views that go on forever. Local oysters, fresh seafood, and a magical West Marin atmosphere. Waterside cottages available for overnight stays.
Perry's brought its classic San Francisco comfort fare tradition — known since 1969 for its Cobb Salad, Tomato Bisque, prime steaks, and legendary hamburger — to Novato in May 2022. Perched on a hillside against the Pacheco Valley with a great outdoor patio, vaulted dining room ceilings, and a private Oak Room for up to 75 guests. Open seven days a week for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch. One of Novato's most welcomed restaurant additions in recent years.

6. Diners, Cafés & Delis
↑ Back to TopFast, personal, and made by someone who actually knows how to cook — Marin's diners, cafes, and delis are the real answer to "I don't have time to sit down for a meal."
The kind of longevity that can't be manufactured — LJ's has been slicing sandwiches to order since 1969, and the Sub Hut Special has kept the same regulars loyal for more than 50 years. This is what a real neighborhood deli looks like when it's allowed to just keep doing its job, generation after generation.
A family-run Novato institution serving custom Italian-inspired sandwiches for decades, built on salame, mortadella, prosciutto, and provolone stacked exactly the way regulars like it. The kind of place where the person behind the counter genuinely remembers your order.
Voted the best coffee shop in Marin County — an industrial-chic cafe and roastery where the beans are actually roasted on-site, not shipped in from a factory hundreds of miles away. Nitro cold brew and single-origin pour-overs made by people who genuinely care how it tastes.

7. Micro-Dining & Small Startups
↑ Back to TopMarin is full of small, independent, brand-new places that did not fit anywhere else on this page — the tiny storefronts, hole-in-the-walls, and one-owner kitchens betting everything on one good idea. Organized by town.
Anthony — known to everyone simply as "Lou" — calls his own restaurant a pint-sized eatery, and he's not exaggerating. All the recipes are 100% original. He shops the Marin Farmers Market twice a week for lettuces and vegetables, and every dressing, stock, and hot sauce is made in-house. This is what one person, cooking with real intention, looks like at the smallest possible scale.
Chef Jun-san, from northern Kyushu, Japan, has worked as a chef for almost 30 years — inspired by the rich culinary traditions of his hometown, he opened this small machi sushi-ya (local sushi shop) to bring his homemade flavor of ko-ryouri (small dishes) and nigiri to California.
Owners Rich Dave and Samantha Lal have a genuinely distinctive angle: they roast their own coffee beans over oak wood, which brings out the beans' natural flavor without increasing acidity. Valrhona chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon morning buns, and almond croissants round out a small downtown San Rafael cafe built on a simple idea — high-quality ingredients, the things Marin County actually values.
Chef Tien Lam opened Bacon on Grant Ave in 2015, built a loyal following around Honeybee Bacon and house frittatas, and then did something that captures the whole spirit of this section: he opened a second, completely different concept. Pearl, right in the Novato Fair Shopping Center, serves Vietnamese poke bowls, banh mi, and boba tea. Same owner, same entrepreneurial instinct, two distinct restaurants.

8. Dive Bars, Taverns & Speakeasies
↑ Back to TopNot every great Marin County evening ends when the check arrives — sometimes dinner is just the first act. These are Marin's bars, taverns, and speakeasies, where a good night out often continues.
Opened originally as The Brown Jug before Prohibition shut it down in 1921, reopened in 1933, renamed in 1939 — and immortalized on the cover of Huey Lewis and the News' landmark album Sports, making The Deuce arguably the most famous dive bar in Northern California. Pool table, neon signs, cold beer, zero pretension.
Founded by A.P. "Pete" Pellolio, who won the location in a poker game and turned it into Marin County's only legal card room — a title it still holds. Texas Hold'em and Omaha alongside a full bar, restaurant, pool, and darts, family-owned for over 70 years running.
Opened in 1907 as a general store deep in the San Geronimo Valley, survived Prohibition disguised as a soda fountain, and returned to its saloon roots to become a beloved live music venue surrounded by redwoods and creek sounds. The kind of place you have to already know about to find.

Marin's Table, Complete
Marin County's food culture is alive and well — an extraordinary mixture of exceptional and down-to-earth, tradition and exotic, all within a single county. From a Michelin star in a San Anselmo storefront to a card room that's been dealing hands since 1951; from centuries-old Mexican, Caribbean, and Peruvian culinary traditions to a Prohibition-era herring smokehouse turned inn on Tomales Bay; from the quiet loyalty of a neighborhood deli to a three-Michelin-star tasting menu an hour up the road — there is genuinely something here for everyone.
That range reflects Marin itself: a county of remarkably varied means and backgrounds, set against some of the most exceptional natural beauty in California. Eight Lands, one county, and — as this page has hopefully shown — no shortage of ways to taste all of it.
