Hotels & Lodging — Where to Stay in Marin County

Marin County's lodging landscape divides naturally into two distinct categories — and understanding the difference helps you choose the right place for the right trip. The first is the Destination Hotel: a property where the location, setting, and experience are themselves the reason you chose it. The second is the Service Hotel: a comfortable, well-appointed property that serves the practical needs of business travelers, families visiting relatives, wedding party guests, conference attendees, and anyone who simply needs a reliable and convenient base.

Marin has exceptional examples of both — and the distinction matters because Marin's most memorable lodging tends to be smaller and more intimate than a grand resort. The county's character resists the enormous hotel scale. What it offers instead is something rarer: a waterfront inn with a private balcony over San Francisco Bay, a lodge in a restored military fort beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, a historic farmhouse inn at the edge of Point Reyes National Seashore. These are places you remember. And for the traveler who simply needs a comfortable room and easy highway access, Marin has that too — reliably and well.

🏨 On Choosing Where to Stay in Marin — From a Long-Time Marin Resident

"The most important question to ask when choosing Marin lodging is simple: what did you come here to do? If you came to explore San Francisco, Sausalito's waterfront hotels put you steps from the Golden Gate Ferry — no car needed, no bridge traffic, just a beautiful boat ride to the city. If you came for Point Reyes and the wild West Marin coast, a small inn in Olema or Inverness puts you at the trailhead with the morning fog still in the valleys. If you came for a family event or a business conference, the service hotels along Highway 101 in San Rafael, Novato, or Corte Madera are comfortable, well-equipped, and easy for guests arriving from every direction."

"Marin's lodging is not about luxury for its own sake — though some of it is genuinely luxurious. It is about waking up in the right place for the Marin you came to experience."

🌉

Destination Hotels & Inns

Properties where the location, setting, and experience are the point. You choose them for where they are and what they offer beyond a room — bay views, historic character, proximity to nature, or an experience that simply cannot be replicated anywhere else. Concentrated in Southern Marin (Sausalito, Tiburon) and West Marin (Point Reyes, Olema, Stinson Beach). Generally boutique in scale. Often the most memorable stays you will ever have.

🏢

Service Hotels

Well-appointed, reliable properties serving the practical needs of business travelers, families, wedding parties, and conference attendees. Comfortable rooms, good amenities, easy highway access, and consistent quality. Clustered along the Highway 101 corridor in Novato, San Rafael, Corte Madera, and Mill Valley. Includes well-known national brands — Marriott, Hilton, Embassy Suites — alongside quality independent properties. The right choice when proximity to all of Marin matters more than a specific setting.

Destination Hotels — Sausalito

Sausalito's waterfront hotels offer something genuinely rare — a front-row seat to one of the world's great natural harbors, with the San Francisco skyline across the water and the Golden Gate Bridge visible from almost every terrace. These are the hotels you choose when the setting itself is part of the experience.

The finest hotel in Marin County by virtually any measure — and one of the most extraordinary lodging experiences in all of California. Cavallo Point Lodge sits on the grounds of historic Fort Baker within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, at the northern foot of the Golden Gate Bridge. To the south, the entire panorama of San Francisco's skyline is almost close enough to touch. To the west, the familiar red arcs of the bridge fill the sky. The Michelin Guide, which awarded Cavallo Point two of its prestigious Keys for "an exceptional stay," describes the experience simply: the Lodge solves the dilemma of being either in San Francisco or quite far from it by embracing that juxtaposition completely.

Guests choose between meticulously restored historic officers' residences — with wood-burning fireplaces, period details, and wrap-around porches — and thoroughly contemporary rooms in newer structures up the hill. The property also features the Sula restaurant, a full-service spa, a cooking school with rotating Bay Area chefs, morning yoga classes, hiking trails from the front door, and free tours of Fort Baker. A complete destination in itself.

✦ San Rafael's Best-Kept Lodging Secret

🏨 The Panama Hotel — A Gerstle Park Hidden Gem Since 1910

Tucked into a quiet residential corner of San Rafael's Gerstle Park neighborhood — easy to drive past without ever knowing it's there — the Panama Hotel began life in 1910 as a two-story wooden Victorian home. In 1926, Joe and Maria Gargiulo settled in and started taking in travelers arriving at the San Rafael train station two blocks away. Word spread about Maria's cooking, and by 1937 the family had added a stucco dining room to house what became Marin County's first Mexican restaurant, Maria's Pueblo — run by the Gargiulos for more than fifty years.

A later owner renamed it the Panama Hotel — the story goes it was some combination of a Panama hat collection and a fondness for the 1942 film Panama Hattie, though nobody's entirely sure which. Since 1984 it's been run by San Rafael native Dan Miller, who has kept the ten-room inn exactly as eccentric and personal as its history suggests: mismatched vintage décor, one of the most lush hotel patios in Marin County, and a restaurant with live music several nights a week. It has the kind of low-key, unadvertised charm that longtime locals — including the rideshare drivers who quietly drop guests at the door — have long appreciated, and new visitors are always delighted to discover.

💡 Practical Tips for Booking Marin County Lodging

Book Early for West Marin

Properties in Point Reyes, Olema, Inverness, and Stinson Beach have very limited room counts and are frequently booked weeks or months in advance — especially for weekends and summer. Book as early as possible.

Ferry-Accessible Hotels

Staying in Sausalito, Tiburon, or Larkspur gives you ferry access to San Francisco — meaning you can visit the city without renting a car or dealing with bridge traffic. The ferry ride itself is a beautiful experience.

Weekend vs Weekday Pricing

Destination hotels in Sausalito and Tiburon can be significantly more expensive on weekends due to demand from San Francisco day-trippers upgrading to overnight stays. Midweek visits often offer better rates and quieter atmospheres.

Consider Your Purpose

Decide first what you came to Marin to do, then choose lodging accordingly. Hiking Point Reyes? Stay in Olema. Exploring Sausalito? Stay on Bridgeway. Attending a Civic Center event? A central San Rafael hotel makes the most sense.

Vacation Rentals

Marin County has a strong vacation rental market — particularly in West Marin, Stinson Beach, and the Mill Valley area — through Airbnb, VRBO, and local rental agencies. For families or groups, a vacation home often provides better value and more space than comparable hotels.
